Catholicism in China

Danielle Rose, in collaboration with Spirit Juice Studio, traveled to China to create the music video “Little Flower” on behalf of the China Little Flower orphanage. During our expedition, we came across displays of profound faith and devotion in a part of the world where Christianity has had a long and complicated history.

Following the 1949 takeover by the Communist Party of China, Catholic and Protestant missionaries were expelled from the country, and the religion was vilified as a manifestation of western imperialism. In 1957, the Chinese government established the Chinese Patriotic Catholic Association, which rejects the authority of the Holy See and appoints its own bishops.

This living collage serves as a compilation of the moments that inspired us most during (and long after) our visit.
